Sunderlal Bahuguna was the founder of the Chipko Movement. He was closely associated with Gaura Devi, one of the pioneers of the movement. In 1973, Gaura Devi and her friends became famous all over India due to their efforts in preserving the forest in their village from loggers. When loggers arrived, Gaura Devi and her friends decided to protest against the logging of trees by hugging the trees. They hugged the trees till the loggers saw that the fierce villagers refused to relent and were forced to leave the village empty handed.
