When there is a tissue injury that results in a cut in a blood vessel, the damaged tissue outside the blood vessel as well as the platelets inside the damaged blood vessel activate a cascade of clotting factors.

Prothrombin is the inactive form of thrombin that is present in the plasma. Thrombokinase converts prothrombin to active thrombin which in turn activate fibrinogen to fibrin. All these clotting factors help in blood coagulation.
