Biological nitrogen fixation is a process in which two moles of ammonia are produced from one mole of nitrogen gas, at the expense of 16 moles of ATP and a supply of electrons and protons (hydrogen ions). This reaction which is performed exclusively by prokaryotes using an enzyme complex termed nitrogenase. However, some of the nitrogen fixing bacteria live independently and are called as free-living nitrogen fixing bacteria and Azatobacter is one such genus.
