Non-metals are those elements that are electron acceptors. They have 5, 6, or 7 electrons in their outermost shell, and in order to gain stability, and complete their nearest noble gas configuration, they accept electrons.

There are 17 nonmetals in the periodic table and period 2 has the most nonmetals.
They are Carbon, Nitrogen, Oxygen, Fluorine, and Neon.
