Mendel chose pea plants (Pisum sativum) for his experiments because they had easily observable characteristics (traits) that had constant differentiating characteristics and these traits could be manipulated easily. Three characteristics of the pea plants are height (tall and dwarf), pod color (green and yellow), and seed shape(round and wrinkled).
