Question

Who suggested the distribution of electrons into different shells? How are the electrons distributed across these shells?  [5 MARKS]

Solution

Who suggested : 1 Marks Filling up of shells : 4 Marks The distribution of electrons across the energy shells was suggested by Bohr and Bury. According to the Bohr-Bury scheme, the electrons are distributed across the shells according to the following rules: (i) The maximum no. of electrons which any shell can accomodate is given by 2n2 where n is the number of shell ( n for K = 1, for L =2, etc.) (ii) The maximum number of electrons which can be accomodated in the outermost shell is 8. (iii) Electrons are not accomodated in a given shell unless the inner shells get filled to their capacity first.
