Explanation: 2 Marks
Diagram with examples: 3 Marks

Carnivorous plants derive some or most of the nutrients (but not energy) from trapping and consuming animals or protozoans, typically insects and other arthropods. Carnivorous plants have adapted to grow in places where the soil is poor in nutrients, especially nitrogen, such as acidic bogs and rock out croppings. Carnivorous plants have six basic trapping mechanisms (with representative genera or species):

Adhesive: Eg- Drosera
Pitfall: Eg- Heliamphora
Lobster pot: Eg- Darlingtonia
Pigeon trap: Eg- Genlisea
Snap: Eg- Dionaea
Suction: Eg- Utricularia
