Why are lp-lp repulsion greater than lp-bp and bp-bp?

Open in App
Solution

Dear StudentLone pairs are not involved in bond formation, and are free to make more repulsion as it is only under the attraction of one atom only. But bond pairs are bonded between two atoms, and are very close to nucleus as it is shared between two atoms. This results that bond pair make lower repulsion. So the order of repulsion is:lp-lp>bp-lp>bp-bpRegards
