Why are neurons called excitable cells? Mention special features of the membrane of the neuron?

Open in App
Solution

Membranes of neurons are in a polarized state. Different ions interact with the membrane to change polarization and thus neuron becomes excited. The ability to become polarized or depolarized is necessary for the transmission of nerve impulses. Hence, neurons are called excitable cells. Thus, Excitability and conductivity are some special features of the neuron membrane.
