Question

Why are root nodules pink in colour?

Open in App
Solution

Healthy root nodules are pink in colour due to the presence of leghaemoglobin which absorbs oxygen. This is important because presence of oxygen inhibits the enzyme nitrogenase present in root nodules that fixes nitrogen into its soluble forms.
