Question

Why can red muscle fibres work for longer periods continuously?

Open in App
Solution

Red muscle fibres work for longer periods continuously because they contain abundant myoglobin, the pigment which stores oxygen. They can, therefore, continue work over long periods by using myoglobin stored oxygen and hence performing aerobic respiration. White muscle fibres have less myoglobin.
