For some time, her elder son Shivalingasarja took over the reign of Kittur; but then, he died. Queen Chenamma adopted a boy named Shivalingappa and started ruling as a regent. The British passed the Doctrine of Lapse policy, according to which, adopted kids were not allowed to rule. It was an annexation policy of the British. This forced Chenamma to go to war.
