Question

Why do adolescents experience mood swings?

Open in App
Solution

During adolescence, teenagers experience frequent and sometimes extreme changes in their mood like some time they are happy and calm while at other time they are depressed and irritated. This kind of swings in mood and their feelings within a short span is described as mood swings. This mostly occurs during the initiation of puberty, because there is a shifting level of sex hormones. The sex hormones- testosterone in boys and estrogen, as well as progesterone in girls stimulate the development of reproductive organs and secondary sex characters in both. During puberty, such hormonal secretion can affect the emotional health of an individual that may result in mood swings.
