Question

Why does the catalyst lower activation energy?

Open in App
Solution

Catalyst: A catalyst is a substance that affects the rate of reaction without itself being consumed at the end of the reaction and the phenomenon is called catalysis.

Catalyst lower activation energy is:

  1. By altering the reaction's transition state, a catalyst lowers the activation energy.
  2. After that, the reaction follows a different mechanism than the uncatalyzed reaction.
  3. The catalyst forms a complex with the reactants and provides an alternate path with a lower energy of activation for the reaction; the forward and backward reactions are affected to the same extent.
