Question

Why doesn't meristematic tissue have intercellular spaces?

Open in App
Solution

Meristematic tissue have dense cytoplasm. They are rapidly and continuously dividing tissues and give rise to new cells. These are mainly involved in increasing length and girth of plant. They are so tightly packed that there is no intercellular spaces in between the cells.
If intercellular spaces would have been present, meristematic cells would not be able to divide rapidly and continuously. Another reason is that the main function of vacoules is to store nutrients, excess salts etc but meristamatic cells do not need to store these nutrients because of their compact shape.
