Question

Why electric potential difference is scalar quantity even there is the direction of electrons.

Open in App
Solution

Electric potential difference does not obey the law of parrellogram of vectors .so that is why it is scaler quantity.

Electric potential difference is often simply called potential difference by physicists. Under direct current (DC) conditions and at any one instant in time under alternating current (AC), potential and potential difference are numerical or scalar quantities, not vectors, and they can have positive or negative values.

And for this reason electric current should be considered a vector as it has both magnitude and direction. But in addition, vectors obey the law of parrellogram of vectors, which the electric current does not obey. For this reason, current is a scalar quantity and not a vector.
