Why is that once a person starts taking alcohol or drugs, it is difficult to get rid of this habit?

Solution

Alcohol/drug intoxication directly affects brain cells and alter the balance of secretion of neurotransmitters. With prolonged use of alcohol/drug, brain cells become adapted to these changes and secretion of certain neurotransmitters is altered to function normally when alcohol or drug is present in the blood. These long-term chemical changes make the person drug/alcohol addicted and initiate withdrawal symptoms when one attempts to leave the habit.
