Question

Why nitrogen is less reactive at room temperature?

Solution

Due to the presence of triple bond between the two nitrogen atoms the bond dissociation energy of $$N_{2} (941.1\ kJ\ mol^{-1})$$ is very high therefore nitrogen is less reactive at room temperature. However nitrogen reacts with metals at higher temperature to form nitrides.
