Question

Why will protons stay together if like charges repel??

Open in App
Solution

The electromagnetic force(repulsive force between two protons or like charges)of repulsion between positive protons in the nucleus is overcome by the strong nuclear force between protons and neutrons. The nuclear force is about 137 times stronger than the electromagnetic force of repulsion between the protons. Thus the protons stay together.
