Solution

Variations which are beneficial to the organism is passed on to its progeny, leading to the evolution of species. For example, the green colour of a beetle is an inherited trait, that helps in its survival (as it can by mix with green bushes to hide). It is a beneficial variation and is brought about by a change in the genes of the reproductive cells.
