Dear student,
In the year 1921 economic crisis, demographic and political crises were spread out all over Russia. A severe famine broke out namely the Povolzhye famine which was resulted mainly due to the disturbance of the Russian civil war and the Russian revolution which broke down railway transportation that affected food distribution to the country. Famine started in the spring of 1921 that lasted till 1922. Drought in 1921 horrified the famine situation because the food was not reachable to the citizens and a severe hunger formed when the citizens of Russia were likely to eat seed grains over sowing it. It was estimated that nearly five million died in that famine.
