Nucleic acids:

  • “The particles in the nucleus of the cell, responsible for heredity, are called chromosomes which are made up of proteins and another type of biomolecules called nucleic acids.”
  • Nucleic acid is categorized into two types that are discussed below:
  1. Deoxyribonucleic acid(DNA)
  2. Ribonucleic acid (RNA)

DNA:

  • DNA has a double-stranded structure.
  • DNA is the chemical basis of heredity and has the coded message for proteins to be synthesized in the cell.
  • DNA contains four bases viz. adenine (A), guanine (G), cytosine (C), and thymine (T).

RNA:

  • RNA has a single-stranded structure.
  • RNA also contains four bases, the first three bases are the same as in DNA but the fourth one is uracil (U).
