When sodium iodate is added to a solution of sodium bisulphite the following reaction occurs:

$2 N a I O_{3} + 5 N a H S O_{3} \to 3 N a H S O_{4} + 2 N a_{2} S O_{4} + I_{2} + H_{2} O$

Iodine which is commercially important is formed during the reaction.
