Question

Write the conjugate acids for the following Bronsted bases $$\displaystyle { NH }_{ 2 }^{ - },\;{ NH }_{ 3 }$$ and $${ HCOO }^{ - }$$.

Solution

To convert the Bronsted base into their conjugate base, the base has to gain a proton.

$$\underset {\text {Bronsted Base}}{\displaystyle { NH }_{ 2 }^{ - }} +  H^+ \rightarrow \underset {\text {Conjugate acid}}{{ NH }_{ 3 }}$$

The conjugate acids for the Bronsted bases $$\displaystyle { NH }_{ 2 }^{ - },\;{ NH }_{ 3 }$$ and $${ HCOO }^{ - }$$ are $$\displaystyle { NH }_{ 3 },\ { NH }_{ 4 }^{ + }$$ and $$HCOOH$$ respectively.
