CH3CH3|C|C2H5C|HOHCH3

Open in App
Solution

The IUPAC name is 3,3-dimethylpentan-2-ol.

The longest continuous chain of C atoms has 5 C atoms.

Hence, the parent chain is pentane. An -OH group is present as a substituent on second C atom and is named as suffix -2-ol where 2 indicates the position of C atom to which -OH group is attached.

Two methyl groups are present as substituents on third C atom are named as prefix 3,3-dimethyl where 3 indicates the position of C atom to which methyl groups are attached.

The prefix 'di' indicates 2. The numbering is done from the end which gives the lowest possible locants.
