Question

Write the names and structures of the monomers of the following polymers.

(i) Bakelite (ii) Nylon-6,6 (iii) Polythene

Open in App
Solution

i)Bakelite

Bakelite is a condensation polymer of phenol and formaldehyde.

Thus its monomers are as follow:
C6H5OHphenol and HCHOformaldehyde

ii)Nylon6,6

It is the condensation polymer of adipic acid and hexamethylene diamine.
Here 6 represents the number of carbon atoms in each monomer.

The two monomers of Nylon-6,6 can be given as follow:
HOOC(CH2)4COOHadipic acid and H2N(CH2)6NH2hexamethylene diamine

iii)Polyethene

Polyethene is an addition polymer of ethene.
