Question

Write the number of C and H atoms in a molecule of Propane.

Open in App
Solution

Step 1: Introduction

Alkane is a saturated hydrocarbon that has Carbon-Carbon and Carbon-Hydrogen atoms that are only connected through single bonds.

The general formula of an alkane is CnH2n+2.

Where, n is the number of Carbon atoms in alkane compound and,

2n+2 tells about the number of Hydrogen atoms in an alkane compound.

Step 2: Determination of number of carbon atoms:

Prop represents three-Carbon (C) atom in a compound.

Step 3: Substituting the value of n = 3 in general formula:

The general formula is CnH2n+2

C3H2x3+2=C3H8

The molecular formula of the Propane is C3H8.

Hence, there are three Carbon (C) atoms and eight Hydrogen (H) atoms in Propane.
