Question

Write the reactions of F2 and Cl2 with water?

Open in App
Solution

(i) Fluorine reacts with water to produce oxygen and ozone.

2F2(g)+2H2O(l)4HF(aq)+O2(g)3F2(g)+3H2O(l)6HF(aq)+O3(g)

(ii) Chlorine reacts with water to some extent to give a green solution.

Cl2 + H2OSunlight HCl+ HOCl

The Hypochlorous Acid, HClO, is not very stable and the solution readily decomcomposes, especially when exposed to sunlight, yielding HCl and Oxygen.

2 HOCl 2 HCl+ O2.
