Question

Write word equations and then balanced equations for the reactions taking place when
(a) dilute sulphuric acid reacts with zinc granules.
(b) dilute hydrochloric acid reacts with magnesium ribbon.
(c) dilute sulphuric acid reacts with aluminium powder.
(d) dilute hydrochloric acid reacts with iron filings.

Solution

(a) Sulphuric acid + Zinc $$\rightarrow $$  Zinc sulphate + Hydrogen

     $$H_2SO_4 + Zn \rightarrow ZnSO_4 + H_2$$

(b) Hydrchloric acid + Magnesium $$\rightarrow $$ Magenssium chloride + Hydrogen

      $$2HCl + Mg \rightarrow MgCl_2 + H_2$$

(c) Sulphuric acid + Aluminium $$\rightarrow $$ Aluminium sulphate + Hydrogen

     $$3H_2SO_4 + 2Al \rightarrow Al_2(SO_4)_3 + 3H_2$$

(d) Hydrchloric acid _ Iron $$\rightarrow $$ Iron (II) chloride + Hydrogen

     $$2HCl + Fe \rightarrow FeCl_2 + H_2$$
