Question

Yellow light emitted from a sodium lamp has a wavelength $$(\lambda)$$ of 580 nm. Calculate the frequency $$(\nu)$$, wave number and energy of yellow light photon.


Solution

Frequency $$(\nu)= \dfrac {c}{\lambda}=\dfrac {3.0 \times 10^8}{580 \times 10^{-9}}=5.17 \times 10^{14}$$ Hz 

Wave number $$={\overline \nu}= \dfrac {1}{\lambda}=\dfrac {1}{580 \times 10^{-9}}=1.724 \times 10^{6} m^{-1}$$

Energy, $$E=h{\nu}= 6.626 \times 10^{-34} \times 5.17 \times 10^{14}$$ 

                 $$=34.25 \times 10^{-20}$$ J/photon
