Question

A baby crawls 8 feet towards the west and then 8 feet towards the north. It then moves 14 feet towards the east. How far and in which direction is the baby from the starting point?

Solution

Determine the distance and direction of the baby from the starting point.

In the figure,AB=8 is the path baby crawls toward the west,

BC=8 is the path baby crawls toward the north after turning.

CE=14is the path baby crawls toward east finally.

So, the path covered is AwestB,BnorthCandCEEast as shown below:

C-----D---->EIIB<----A

Distance between the initial and final point is AE toward North east direction.

Let D be any point in CE such that CD=8ft.

Since with respect to the direction of paths, ABCDandADBC and also AB=CD=BC=AD=8ft.

Thus a quadrilateral ABCD is obtained which is square.

And also a right-angled triangle ADE formed.

Apply Pythagoras theorem in right angle to find the distance from point A to point E:

AE2=AD2+DE2AE2=AD2+CE-CD2AE2=82+14-82AE2=64+36AE2=100AE=100AE=10

Therefore, distance between the starting point and ending point is 10m in the north east direction.
