Question

A cube is pushed such that it slides on a horizontal surface. The friction can be increased by?

Open in App
Solution

  1. When a cube slides over a horizontal surface on the application of a horizontal force, the surface irregularities of the cube and the surface lock each other which hampers the movement of the block on the horizontal surface.
What causes friction between two surfaces in contact when they try to slide past each other?

2. Frictional force is developed when the block slides over the horizontal surface.

3. The frictional force acts opposite to the direction of the applied pushing force and consequently opposes the motion.

Factors Affecting Friction - GeeksforGeeks

4. The relation connecting the frictional force (F), coefficient of friction (μ), the mass of block (m) and acceleration due to gravity (g) is given by

5. F=μ×m×g

6. From the relation above, it is clear that the “frictional force is directly proportional to the coefficient of friction and the mass”.

7. More the coefficient of friction or mass, the more will be the frictional force developed and vice versa.

8. Frictional force can be increased by Increasing the coefficient of friction which is mainly done by making the surfaces rougher.

9. Scratching the given horizontal surface or the cube with some available tool will surely increase the surface roughness which will increase the friction.

10. Increasing the mass of the block by connecting another block to it will increase the frictional force because frictional force is directly proportional to mass.

A block B is placed on block A.The mass of block B is less than the mass of block A.Friction exists between the blocks, whereas the ground on which the block A is

Hence, the frictional force can be increased by increasing the coefficient of friction between the block and the surface or by increasing the mass of the block.
