Question

A diode as a rectifier converts?

Open in App
Solution

Diode as a rectifier:

  1. The main application of the p-n junction diode lies in the rectification of the circuits.
  2. These circuits are often used to describe the conversion of a.c signals to d.c in power supply systems.
  3. The primary filter smoothes the pulsation in the voltage to produce d.c voltage, whereas a regulator is used which removes the ripples.
  4. There are two basic methods of diode rectification: Half wave rectifier and Full wave rectifier.
  5. A diode as a rectifier is mainly used for converting AC to DC.
  6. Following are the applications of the diode as a rectifier given below:
    1. It is generally used for the mixing of signals.
    2. It is also used for the detection of signals.
    3. Used widely in lighting systems.
    4. Whenever a diode is used as a rectifier, it acts like a two-lead semiconductor which allows current to pass from only one direction.

Thus, a diode as a rectifier converts AC (alternating current) to DC ( direct current).
