A floor is $5m$ long and $4m$ wide. A square carpet of sides $3m$ is laid on the floor. Find the area of the floor that is not carpeted.

We have to determine the area of the floor that is not carpeted.

Here, length of floor $=4cm$

Breadth of floor $=b=3m50cm=3.50m$

We know that area of rectangle is given by

Area of rectangle $=$ length $\times$ width

Area of floor $=l\times b=5\times 4$

$=20m^2$

Area of square carpet $=3\times 3=9m^2$

Area of floor that is not carpeted $20-9=11m^2$

∴ Area of the floor that is not carpeted is $11m^2$
