Question

A fly was sitting on a block. A man draws a circle of area 2cm2, thus enclosing the fly. He then applies a force of 20N and kills it with a flat stick. Calculate the pressure on that area.

Solution

Step1: Given data

The area of the circle is 2cm2.

Force is 20N

Step2: Formula used

P=fa[whereP=pressure,f=force,a=area]

Step3: Calculating pressure

Pressure is the amount of force applied normally to the surface area of an object. In other words, it is the force applied per unit area.

Given area is 2cm2=2×10-4m2

Substituting the value of area and force in the formula

P=faP=202×104P=105Pa

Hence, the pressure on that area is 105Pa
