Nitrogen fixation:

It is a mechanism in which the atmospheric nitrogen is fixed into the forms in which can be easily absorbed by plants.

There are two types of nitrogen-fixing species.

(1) Symbiotic species – These bacteria that form symbiotic relationship with other organisms.

Examples – Bradyrhizobium and Rhizobium

(2) Nonsymbiotic species – They are free-living bacteria.

Examples – Anabaena, Nostoc and Cyanobacteria
