A jet plane is travelling towards west at a speed of 1800 km/h. What is the voltage difference developed between the ends of the wing having a span of 25 m, if the Earth's magnetic field at the location has a magnitude of 5 x 10-4 T and the dip angle is 300?

Given

A jet plane is travelling towards west

V = 1800 km/h

V = (1800 x 1000)/ (60 x 60)

We get,

V = 500 m/s

Earth’s field, B = 5 x 10-4

Angle of dip, δ  = 300

Distance between the ends of the wing = 25 m

Bv = B sin δ

Bv = 5.0 x 10-4 x sin 300

Bv = 5 x 10-4 x 1/2

We get,

Bv = 2.5 x 10-4 T

Induced e.m.f produced

ε = Bv.Vl

ε = 2.5 x 10-4 x 500 x 25

We get,

ε = 3.125 V

Hence, the voltage difference developed between the ends of the wing is 3.125 V
