Question

A man walks 7km in 2hours and 2km in 1hour in the same direction. What is man's average velocity for the whole journey?

Open in App
Solution

Step 1: Given

Distance covered in 2 hours: D1=7km

Distance covered in 1 hour: D2=2km

Time taken to cover D1: T1=2hours

Time taken to cover D2: T2=1hour

Step 2: Formula Used

AverageVelocity=TotalDisplacementTotalTime

Step 3: Find the average velocity

Calculate the total distance by adding both the distances.

TotalDistance=D1+D2=7km+2km=9km

Calculate the total time by adding both the times.

TotalTime=T1+T2=2hrs+1hr=3hrs

Calculate the average velocity using the formula. Since the motion is in a straight line, Displacement=Distance.

AverageVelocity=TotalDisplacementTotalTime=9km3hrs=3km/hrs

Hence, the average velocity is 3 km/hrs.
