Question

A moving coil galvanometer of resistance 100Ω is used as an ammeter using a resistance 0.1Ω. The maximum deflection current in the galvanometer is 100μA. Find the minimum current in the circuit so that ammeter shows maximum deflection.

Solution

Step 1: Given

Resistance of galvanometer: G=100Ω

Shunt resistance: S=0.1Ω

Current in galvanometer: Ig=100μA=100×10-6A

Step 2: Formula Used

I=IgGS+1

Step 3: Find the minimum current in the circuit for the ammeter to show maximum deflection.

Substitute the given values in the formula

I=100×10-61000.1+1A=100×10-61000+1A=100×10-6×1001A=100.1×10-3A=100.1mA

Hence, the minimum current in the circuit so that ammeter shows maximum deflection is 100.1mA.
