Solution

The correct option is C

136km

Step 1. Given data

A piece of ice falls from a height h so that t melts completely. Only one-quarter of the heat produced is absorbed b the ice, and all energy of ice gets converted into heat during its fall.

Latent heat of ice =3.4×105J/k

g=10N/kg

We have to find the value of h.

Step 2. Concept to be used

In physics, the conservation of energy is the total energy of an isolated system remains constant irrespective of whatever internal changes may take place with energy disappearing in one form reappearing in another.

According to conservation of energy, energy obtained by the ice during its fall from height h is given by,

E=mgh

Here, E is the potential energy, m is the mass of object, g is gravity and h is height.

Step 3: Find the value of height.

It is given that, only one- quarter of its energy is absorbed by the ice.

Therefore,

mgh4=mLf

Here, Lf is latent heat of force.

Put the all given value in the above equation. We get,

h=mLf×4mg

=3.4×105×410

=13.6×104

=13600m

=136km

So, the value of h is 136km.

Hence, option C is the correct answer.
