Question

A tank 5m high is filled with water up to 3m then is filled to the top with oil of density 0.85gcm3. Calculate the total pressure at the bottom of the tank due to these liquids.

Open in App
Solution

Step 1: Given

Height of the tank = 5m

Height of water = 3m

Height of oil = 2m

Density of oil ρ1= 0.85gcm3=850kgm3

Density of water ρ2= 1gcm3=1000kgm3

Step 2: Formula used and calculation

The pressure at the bottom of the tank is

P=h1ρ1g+h2ρ2gP=2×850×9.8+3×1000×9.8P=16660+29400P=46060PaP=46.06kPa

Hence, the total pressure at the bottom of the liquid is 46.06kPa.
