A well of diameter 3m ,dug 14m deep. The earth taken out of it has been spread evenly all around it in the shape of a circular ring of width 4m to form an embankment. Find the height of the embankment.

Solution:

Volume of cylinder = πr2h

Here radius of well, r1 = 1.5m

Depth, h1 = 14 m

Embankment will be in a cylindrical shape having radius r2 = 1.5+4 = 5.5m

Height of embankment be h2

Volume of well = volume of earth used for embankment

πr12h1 = π(r22 – r12)h2

1.52×14 = (5.52 – 1.52)h2

31.5 = 28h2

h2 = 31.5/28

= 1.125 m
