Solution

Ethylamine is soluble in water, whereas aniline is insoluble. This is because:

(1)Ethylamine is capable of forming hydrogen bonds with water as it is soluble but aniline the bulk carbon prevents the formation of effective hydrogen bonding and is not soluble. Ethylamine (C2H5NH2)in addition to water forms intermolecular H−bonds with water. It is soluble in the water.

(2)Aniline(C6H5NH2) does not undergo H−bonding with water to a very considerable extent due to the existence of a large hydrophobic -C6H5 group. Hence, aniline is insoluble in water.
