Question

After prolonged use, springs deform permanently because of _________.

Open in App
Solution

Elasticity:

  1. The property on account of which, the body opposes the deforming forces and regains its original shape and size on the removal of the deforming forces is called elasticity.

Elastic fatigueness:

  1. A body does not return to its original state after being exposed to a relatively large force that is even within the elastic limit for a prolonged period of time, the body is then said to be in a state of elastic fatigue

Spring deformation:

  1. The elastic energy stored in the spring does work by moving lattice dislocations through the metal - this is the physical mechanism responsible for the plastic deformation of the metal spring and is due to this, the spring is permanently deformed when unloaded.

Reasons, why springs become slack after prolonged use.

  1. The elasticity of the material decreases because of repeated deformation in the long run.
  2. The elastic limit also decreases and springs become deformed permanently.

Hence, after prolonged use, springs deform permanently because of elastic fatigueness.
