Question

An express train takes 1hour less than a passenger train to travel 132km between Mysore and Bangalore (without taking into consideration the time they stop at intermediate stations). If the average speed of the express train is 11km/h more than that of the passenger train, find the average speed of the two trains.

Solution

Find the average speed of the two trains.

Let the average speed of the passenger train be xkm/h.

Therefore, according to the question, the average speed of the express train will be (x+11)km/h.

As per the given data, the time taken by the express train to cover 132km is 1hour less than the passenger train i.e.,

Timetakenbythepassengertraintocover132km-Timetakenbytheexpresstraintocover132km=1hour

Therefore,

132x-132x+11=1Timetaken=TotaldistanceAveragespeed132x+11-132xxx+11=1132x+132×11-132xxx+11=11452xx+11=11452=xx+11x2+11x-1452=0x2+44x-33x-1452=0xx+44-33x+44=0x+44x-33=0x=-44,33

Since speed cannot take negative values, therefore consider only the positive value of x i.e. x=33km/h.

Hence, the average speed of passenger train is 33km/h.

The average speed of the express train is

x+11km/h=33+11km/h=44km/h

Hence, the average speed of the passenger train is 33km/h and the average speed of the express train is 44km/h.
