Uses of rocks:

Different types of rocks have different uses and they play a vital role in our day-to-day life. Three main categories of rocks and their uses are compiled below:

Igneous rocks: Igneous rocks are formed by the solidification of molten rock called magma within the Earth and lava on the surface of the Earth. Examples: Granite, pumice, etc.

Uses:

  • Igneous rocks like pumice stones are used as bathing stones.
  • Granites are used for buildings and houses, especially in the kitchen and bathroom.

Sedimentary rocks: Sedimentary rocks are formed on the surface of the Earth by the accumulation of layers of sand, silt, dead plants, and animal skeletons. Examples: Limestone, Quartz, etc.

Uses:

  • Limestone is used to make cement.
  • Limestone and sandstone are used for building stones.
  • Quartz is a type of sedimentary rock that is used to make glass.

Metamorphic rocks: Metamorphic rocks are formed when changes occur in rocks over some time due to changes in physical conditions like pressure, heat, and chemical conditions. Examples: Marble, slate, etc.

Uses:

  • Marble is used for flooring or to make statues.
  • Slate is used for roofing, decorative purposes in gardens, and as a writing board.
