Question

At what temperature does evaporation of a liquid takes place?

Open in App
Solution

Evaporation:

  1. A liquid turns into a gas or vapor phase by the process of evaporation.
  2. It is a surface phenomenon.
  3. Energy (heat) is required for evaporation to take place. This energy is used to break the bonds holding the molecules together.
  4. Evaporation occurs regardless of the temperature because the air molecules that hit the surface provide the molecules some energy.
  5. Since a molecule's kinetic energy is proportional to temperature, greater temperatures cause more evaporation.
  6. Thus, water typically evaporates easily at that boiling point.

Therefore, evaporation of a liquid takes place at any temperature even below its boiling point.
