Question

Barophilic prokaryotes: Grow and multiply in very deep marine sediments or Grow slowly in highly alkaline?

Open in App
Solution

Barophilic prokaryotes:

  1. Baro means pressure.
  2. Barophilic prokaryotes thrive under very high-pressure conditions.
  3. Barophile means pressure loving and they grow in regions of high hydrostatic pressure.
  4. The barophilic bacteria are of three types, barotolerant, barophilic, and extreme barophilic bacteria.
  5. These prokaryotes show some adaptations that help them survive under high pressure like the increased binding ability to enzymes, more PUFA(polyunsaturated fatty acids) in the cell membrane, and many others.
  6. As the atmospheric pressure increases, the growth and reproduction rate of these prokaryotes increases enormously.
  7. Examples of barophilic organisms are Colwellia, and Moritella.
  8. Therefore, they grow and multiply in very deep marine sediments
