Question

Based on which factor are the elements classified into four blocks?

Open in App
Solution

Classification of blocks:-

  • The elements in the periodic table are classified into four blocks, namely s-block, p-block, d-block, and f-block.
  • This classification is done based on which orbital of the atoms the last electron enters.
  • The elements in which the last electron enters the s-orbitals are called the s-block elements.

s-Block Elements:

  • The general electronic configuration of s-blocks are ns(1-2)
  • For example Sodium has an electronic configuration 1s22s22p63s1.
  • We can see that the last electron is in the s-orbital, thus it is an s-block element.

p-Block Elements:

  • The elements in which the last electron enters the p-orbitals are called the p-block elements.
  • The general electronic configuration of p-blocks are ns2np(1-6)
  • For example Aluminium has an electronic configuration 1s22s22p63s23p1.

d-Block Elements

  • The elements in which the last electron enters the d-orbitals are called the d-block elements.
  • The general electronic configuration of d-blocks are (n-1)d(1-10)ns(0-2)
  • For example Cobalt has an electronic configuration 1s22s22p63s23p63d74s2.

f-Block Elements

  • The elements in which the last electron enters the f-orbitals are called the f-block elements.
  • The general electronic configuration of f-blocks are (n2)f(014)(n1)d(010)ns2
  • For example Uranium has an electronic configuration 1s22s22p63s33p63d104s24p64d104f145s25p65d105f36s26p66d17s2.
