Solution

Beckmann thermometer:

  • An instrument called as Beckmann thermometer measures small temperature variations but not absolute temperature values.
  • It was created by German scientist Ernst Otto Beckmann in 1905 for measuring colligative properties.
  • Its normal length is between 40 to 50cm. The temperature scale is divided into hundredths of a degree and normally covers a range of5°C.
  • It is possible to measure temperature changes up to 0.001°C with a magnifier.
  • It is also known as a differential thermometer.
  • It can be used to calculate calorimetry, melting points, and boiling points.
  • The unique feature of Beckmann's thermometer design is a reservoir (R on the diagram) at the top of the tube, which allows the user to adjust the amount of mercury in the bulb to measure temperature variations at either high or low temperatures.

Therefore, Beckmann thermometers are used to measure small temperatures.
